Myra Oppel, M.S., APR, is a communications strategist with expertise in crisis communications, reputation management, corporate communications, thought leadership, media relations and media training. She has provided counsel to government ministries, corporations, nonprofits, trade associations and individuals on such issues as criminal investigations, litigation communications, regulatory investigations, financial transactions, media investigations, labor disputes, fatal accidents and utility issues.
Prior to JKM Strategies, Myra was a senior subject matter expert at Orbis Operations, she helps clients with strategic communication and capacity building. She was also a senior advisor at Penta Group, which she joined through the legacy Copperfield Advisory in New York, where she previously served as senior advisor and partner. Myra formerly was senior vice president for Smith & Company, a Washington, D.C.-based strategic advisory firm; headed media and analyst relations for Accenture’s Federal Services subsidiary; and worked as an independent political media consultant. She led media relations and developed and implemented communications strategy for two major electric utilities, including a nationally recognized reputation turnaround for Washington, D.C.-based Pepco Holdings just after its Pepco utility had been named “The Most Hated Company in America. She also served Pepco Holdings as a communications strategist and spokesperson for a prolonged $6.8 billion utility merger. She began her career as a reporter and editor for newspapers in Mississippi and as a newswoman for the Associated Press.
Her work has been recognized with a number of awards, including a Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Silver Anvil award for integrated communications, a PR News Platinum Award for media relations and gold Pollie awards by the American Association of Political Consultants. Myra also was named by PR News as Media Relations Professional of the Year in 2013.
An accredited public relations professional by PRSA, Myra earned a master’s degree in Strategic Communication from Columbia University, where she now serves as an Associate, and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Mississippi.
